Emergency Care Services Task Force Report 2008

In November 2006, the NCHA Board of Trustees approved and implemented the NCHA Future of Emergency Services Delivery Task Force. The charge for the task force was:

"To examine the delivery of emergency medical services within North Carolina hospitals and to determine principles or policies that NCHA should promote to ensure hospitals are able to meet their patients’ and community’s comprehensive emergency medical services needs today and in the future."

This report summarizes the task force's findings.

    Community Benefits
Saving lives, restoring health, and providing jobs are just the beginning of hospitals' contributions to their communities. Hospitals and their employees positively affect almost every aspect of community life. Some hospitals provide nurses in local schools as a first line of defense against communicable childhood diseases. Others underwrite the salaries of nursing educators, enabling community citizens to step toward careers in healthcare. Hospitals contribute to local economic development foundations, loan executives to lead worthwhile community causes, and provide free care for those who lack sufficient financial resources. Hospitals do much for their communities. These guidelines present hospitals the opportunity to define and quantify the benefits their communities receive.
    Tobacco-Free Hospital Campus Initiative
The Duke Endowment has awarded the N.C. Hospital Foundation a grant of $600,000 over three years to encourage and support all hospitals in North Carolina to become 100 percent tobacco-free campus wide by 2009. The N.C. Hospital Foundation has partnered with N.C. Prevention Partners to assist hospitals in this policy initiative.
