NC General Assembly passes major update to mental health law

North Carolina lawmakers approved an overhaul of a significant portion of the state’s mental health law regarding involuntary commitment (IVC) of individuals in behavioral health crisis. The action represents the first major revision to IVC legislation since the adoption of the Mental Health, Developmental Disabilities and Substance Abuse Act of 1985. The reforms were developed with the input of statewide multi-sector behavioral health workgroups convened over a two-year period by the North Carolina Healthcare Association. The bill now goes to Governor Roy Cooper for his signature. For more details see the attached press release.  Other approved bills headed to the Governor include HB 403 – Behavioral Health and Medicaid ModificationsHB 277– Naturopathic Study, and SB 616 – Heroin & Opioid Prevention & Enforcement Act. For more details plus other state and federal legislative activities, see the recent issue of NCHA Advocacy Daily Update.
