Connect with North Carolina’s Apprenticeship Program

ApprenticeshipNC, managed by NC Community Colleges, helps workers learn specialized skills needed in today’s economy. ApprenticeshipNC is an employer-driven model that combines on-the job learning with related classroom instruction. Apprenticeships in healthcare are rapidly expanding. For instance, Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem was experiencing a shortage of medical coders. The hospital was forced to adopt short-term strategies that involved existing staff having to work overtime, coders working remotely across state lines, and even employing contract coders who were offshore. The solution to the problem was an apprenticeship program called the Veteran Coding Academy. The Wake Forest Baptist Medical School recruits veterans who have graduated from a two-year program at Wake Technical Community College into a one-year apprenticeship program. The one-year apprenticeship program includes additional education, training, and mentoring. If you would like to learn more about the apprenticeship program, contact Shari Phelps, Apprenticeship Consultant at phelpss@nccommunitycolleges.edu or 828-782-2247. An ApprenticeshipNC Conference will be held in April 2019 at the Hotel Ballast in Wilmington. Save the date and stay tuned for more details.
