Report Examines Health Information Exchange by Physicians

Referrals, laboratory results, imaging reports and medication lists were the most common types of patient health information electronically exchanged by office-based physicians in 2015, according to a report released recently by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Among office-based physicians who sent PHI electronically, 68% sent referrals, 67% laboratory results and 65% medication lists. Among physicians who received PHI electronically, 79% received laboratory results, 61% imaging reports and 54% medication lists. Based on the 2015 National Electronic Health Records Survey, the report also examines the extent to which office-based physicians electronically integrated or searched for certain types of PHI.
