More than 8.4 million people, 501,271 in North Carolina, selected or were automatically re-enrolled in a health insurance plan through HealthCare.gov during the 2019 open enrollment period, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services announced Jan. 3. That’s down from 8.7 million at the same time last year (519,803 in NC). About 75 percent of people selecting plans were renewing coverage and the rest were new consumers. CMS’s new data show total plan selections in the 39 states using HealthCare.gov for 2019 open enrollment, which ran through Dec. 15. CMS plans to release additional data in March, including final plan selection data from state-based exchanges that do not use the HealthCare.gov platform.
