Report Highlights Health System Interventions to Prevent Firearm Injury

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine recently released its proceedings from a workshop sponsored by Kaiser Permanente and the American Hospital Association last October on health system interventions to prevent firearm injury and death. According to an associated commentary published by the National Academy of Medicine and co-authored by AHA Chief Medical Officer Jay Bhatt, D.O., workshop participants highlighted three overarching themes for hospitals and health systems to help prevent firearm injury: know the epidemiology and burden of firearm injury in the communities the health care organization serves; invest in research that identifies those at a higher risk of firearm injury and then develop interventions to reach those individuals and communities; and collaborate with other organizations to develop and share best practices and evidence-based prevention programs.
