Earlier this week, an organization funded by the State Employees Association of North Carolina launched a website and television commercial personally attacking North Carolina Healthcare Association (NCHA) Board Chair Dr. Mike Waldrum, who has been a vocal champion for his community. Dr. Waldrum, a critical care physician and CEO, has dedicated his career to caring for others. While North Carolina hospitals, health systems, and doctors have been locked in a heated debate with the State Treasurer about the future of the State Health Plan, none of the parties have taken the attacks to a personal level. This attack, sponsored by the State Employees union, is a step too far.
NCHA President Steve Lawler made the following statement: “Our hospital leaders, and our Board members, work tirelessly to ensure that everyone in our community has access to high quality, affordable care. The people who work in hospitals and other healthcare settings are honorable people working for the betterment of all. While we may disagree with Treasurer Folwell on his approach to reduce costs, we respect his position as the State Treasurer. I call on Treasurer Folwell and the Senate and House leadership to condemn these attacks on Dr. Waldrum and other North Carolina hospital leaders.”
Dr. Waldrum and other hospital leaders throughout the State support working towards collaborative solutions that ensure a sustainable State Health Plan for all state employees, teachers and retirees. It is time to put aside petty politics and focus on what is best for the people of our state.
