Quality improvement organization (QIO)

QIOs hold contracts with CMS to make sure patients get the right care at the right time, particularly among underserved populations. QIOs are directed to ensure that Medicare payment is made only for medically necessary services and to investigate beneficiary complaints about quality of care. The Carolinas Center for Medical Excellence (CCME) has been the designated QIO in North Carolina since 1984 (formerly Medical Review of NC). www.thecarolinascenter.org/
