NC MedAssist

Dispensing Hope for the Uninsured

NC MedAssist is a nonprofit pharmacy program providing access to lifesaving prescription medications, patient support, advocacy and related services to poor, vulnerable, and uninsured North Carolina residents. NC MedAssist seeks to ensure that no eligible person in North Carolina has to choose between purchasing food or their needed medication; improving the patient’s health and lowering uncompensated health care costs for all stakeholders.

Since 1997, MedAssist has dispensed over $30 million in free prescription medicines (average wholesale price or “AWP”) for our clients. Most of the drugs are secured from the Patient Assistance Programs (PAP) available through participating pharmaceutical companies. Our programs include:

  • The Free Pharmacy program provides free prescription medication to North Carolina residents who are low-income, uninsured and fall at or below 200% of the Federal Poverty Level.
  • The Senior Care program is a pharmacy resource for adults 65 and over. If Medicare Part D prescription benefits run out during the year, seniors can utilize the program to learn about other prescription medicine options. The Mobile Free Pharmacy provides adults and children who are low-income and in need with free over the counter medicine. Medicine such as aspirin, children’s cough syrup, allergy medicine and vitamins are just a few items given to families who need assistance.

In 2017, NC MedAssist filled 134,827 prescriptions (up 7.3% since 2016); served 15,565 free pharmacy patients (up 9.4%); served 21,819 people served by Mobile Free Pharmacy (up 10.5%); and served 603 seniors (up 26.7%).
