Parental Access to Electronic Health Records Task Force

Patient portals have become the primary means for patients and families to access medical records. Hospitals recognize the frustration and concern guardians face when they cannot readily view basic information about their adolescent child’s care, such as medications, lab results, or upcoming appointments.

The Parental Access to EHR Task Force is comprised of hospital leaders from information technology, clinical leadership, and legal departments who guide policy development and provide recommendations that inform legislative efforts. A primary focus of this task force is establishing privacy-compliant pathways that improve real-time proxy access for guardians to their minors’ electronic health records, while ensuring adherence to state and federal laws. The Task Force has developed best practices that reflect the features most commonly identified by both guardians and providers as essential for all guardian access.
