NC Medicaid Expansion Toolkit: What You Need to Know

Beginning December 1, 2023, more than 600,000 North Carolinians are now able to get health coverage through NC Medicaid. NC Medicaid covers eligible people ages 19 through 64 years. North Carolinians may be able to get health care coverage through Medicaid even if they didn’t qualify before. Medicaid pays for doctor visits, yearly check-ups, emergency care, mental health and more – at little or no cost to the patient.

To help people understand who is eligible and how to apply, the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services has released a website and bilingual toolkit with information regarding NC Medicaid, including:

NC Tailored Plan Toolkit: What You Need to Know

Behavioral Health and Intellectual/Developmental Disabilities Tailored Plans (or “Tailored Plans”) are a new kind of NC Medicaid Managed Care health plan. Tailored Plans cover your doctor visits, prescription drugs, and services for mental health, substance use, intellectual/developmental disabilities, and traumatic brain injury in one plan. They start July 1, 2024.

If your NC Medicaid will move to a Tailored Plan, a letter would have been mailed to you in mid-April 2024.
